May 2022: Relating on video calls

How do you relate to video calls? It is a modern way of socialising and working, more personable then a telephone call but less personable than an in person interaction. Here are a few ways that may assist you to embrace this way of communicating in a more relational way.

  • Look your best. Hair, make up (if required), clothes (as appropriate for the occasion). This helps you to feel good about yourself on a call and present your best self.
  • Minimise your picture. Not only if you are not a fan of looking at yourself but to assist you to look and focus on the other person/people. You can switch between minimising your picture and seeing it bigger.
  • Be interactive. Make use of chat options, texting, even emailing participants while on the the call. Ask those who have not participated a question or ask for their comment.
  • Make it fun. Have a simple theme like wear a hat or wear something of a specific color.  Change virtual backgrounds. Have a drink or meal together.
  • Learn how to share your screen. Show videos, use the interactive whiteboard, edit documents together, listen to music.
  • Keep it short and sweet. Calls can be shorter than in person interactions to prevent fatigue.

Currently, I work and socialise in a hybrid way, in person, online/video and voice calls. I am intrigued by the flexibility and convenience that the array of modes of interacting bring to us!
